What is a cyberdeck?
A cyberdeck is a personal mobile computer found in many cyberpunk novels and video games that is used by hackers or "Deckers" to temporarily connect their mind or "jack in" to cyberspace. Some of the first appearances of cyberdecks were in the Sprawl Trilogy by William Gibson in the early 1980s. In the real world, cyberdecks are "Artisan Crafted Computers" often powered by single board computers with some sort of display and keyboard made in the cyberpunk aesthetic.
Is it hard to make a cyberdeck?
Your cyberdeck project can be as complex or simple as you choose to make it. People of all skill levels have constructed their own cyberdeck, and there are many resources available within the cyberdeck community to help you construct your own.
What do I need?
Materials and equipment needed to make a deck of your own vary widely from person to person and design. Some people choose to use a non functioning retro computer, removing the internals and installing their SBC of choice and adding a small LCD screen. Other Deckers choose to utilize 3D printers and CAD software such as Tinkercad or Fusion360 to design and print the body of their deck. There have been decks made out of Pelican storage cases and even clipboards! Some people even combine several of these methods. The possibilities really are endless.
How do I get started?
A great way to start is to look online at some retro computers and other cyberdecks that have been built. Find a general form factor that resonates with you and start from there. Sketch out on paper what you want it to look like and then it will be easier to select your components.
How do I select components?
The cyberdeck.cafe features an excellent resource called the Cyberdeck Build Guide, which is a "build your own deck" style listing of parts that have been used by other Deckers in the community, It will walk you through choosing a SBC, keyboard, display, and so on. It is however by no means an exhaustive list. There is no strict guideline what a deck must be or look like, so the options are wide open.
Do I need a 3D printer?
While you don’ absolutely need a 3D printer, it can be helpful to be able to print components. Many Deckers utilize their local maker-spaces which will have a wide host of machinery available to use. In recent years 3D printers have decreased in price dramatically. You may want to pick one up, as it can become incredibly handy to be able to make pretty much anything you need.
I'm not a programmer, is that ok?
Sure it's ok. Many of the Deckers in our community don't know how to code or program. There is however, an ample supply of people willing to help you figure it out if you run into a coding roadblock.
Do I need to know how to solder?
While it is possible to build a deck out of components that use only pre-made connectors, you will probably want to familiarize yourself with the basics of soldering. There are many good resources on YouTube.com and on many websites. If you need to purchase a soldering iron, we recommend getting one that has variable temperature control. Quality irons can be purchased for under $40 even, such as the Weller WLC-100.
Will I need a bunch of tools?
You'll definitely need some basic tools, such as screwdrivers, pliers, wire strippers and cutters, as well as an exacto blade. These are just some of the basic tools, but chances are you already have some of these at home.
I don’t really know much about electronics. Can I still build a cybereck?
Absolutely! You only need basic knowledge of electronics and most people who have used a computer already have that. There are numerous resources both in the cyberdeck community and online or in books that can supplement your knowledge. The cyberdeck community is made up of thousands of people, all with different skill levels and interests. ANYONE can build one, and if you need help, don't be afraid to reach out to the community.
Is it possible to just buy a deck?
Yes, some members of the community do sell completed decks, or even kits that make constructing your own that much easier. Keep an eye open for decks that go up for sale in the discord.
Will there be snacks?
Of course! Stop by the cyberdeck.cafe recipes section to find some tasty snack ideas.
