Workingtitle3D

One does not simply build a new 3D modeler, I sculpted it from a decade of swearing to myself and cursing this BS we've walked ourselves into in the 3DP hobby, a few open source modelers exist some are very good yet not one with the thing i need - accessibility options for Colorblindness. There's a host of variations that make it difficult to impossible for us to do 3d modeling without the perfect lighting and well rested eyes. Being able to see the grid lines clearly at night without the strain was just wishfull thinking for me until now and I’ve waited to share this until i was certain its stable enough. So this ones for us, its for everyone but its specially for those of us who dont see the world like the rest. Theres 3 color schemes to choose from so far and im working on the themer so you can customize to your hearts content.

Hollowed bust with 1.5 Million Triangle’s

Workingtitle3D runs in a browser tab and sips resources, by that i mean it uses less RAM than opening a couple yt vids, you can have hundreds of pieces in your model a million triangless and still run comfy on a decade old laptop.

512MB RAM Use

Screen grab above is from the chrome task manager showing RAM usage at 512MB but it bounces up to about 800MB with this 39MB 800k triangles, get a copy here - here

Here we are after using the hollow tool on the bust and its triangles count jumped to 3.6 million

If you're' wondering about the name, i just like the sound of it no special meaning most names have been taken and this one just fit.

Now before you go read all the more technical details below and my own ramblings on the matter you really should just try it out for yourself, bellow this text right here its already running the moment you opened the page. Works mostly the same with a few slight rendering glitches so to really get the full experience open workingtitle3d.com to its live host at github.io or hit up the repo and grab the source to feed your best coder, change anything you have full control, 3D Modeling software that is yours to keep and that you could improve on in the minutes it takes to read the rest of this page.

Why build your own and if its so good why not sell it?

Every time I sit down to make a widget, I have to log in to something. Agree to something. Wait for a server in another country to decide my widget isn’t banana shaped before its even allowed to exist. I wanted a tool that opens when I double click it, works with WiFi unplugged, and is not padding some corpo wallet while they mine my every click and hesitation. Workingtitle3D is portable, that means no install take it with you on a flash drive and run it anywhere you have a chromium based browser or simply recompile with the tweaks you need so it works in any browser. Run it on your old tablet its great on a touchscreen and will improve as reports come in.

The whole thing is one HTML page. no accounts or telemetry. Your models never leave the machine and what you make is literally your own business and nobody has the right to demand to see it. Simply open in Chromium, Vivaldi, Edge, Brave or any Chromium based browser. Literal 1 second after clicking its ready to start modelling. You’ll get a couple promts for storage sp select where you want autosaves to live and give permission to access that specific folder. You don’t have to do this on every launch but dont worry you'll never want to close this tab again anyway and you don’t have to as it frees up RAM after a helper job completes it doesn’t take much for it to just sit there static.

Whats the catch

Sometimes good things just come about there is no hidden anything, the whole program can fit on a floppydisk and the source is provided so please do dig through it preferably send your complaints and suggestions in prompt form. Look It's free, it will always be free. No subscription is waiting round the corner you have the literal source code available to anyone who wants it, rebuild customize distribute make it better just don't try and sell it. Improvements and addtions requests should go through git so we can track them all. This isn't some one shot and forget project, it'll be maintained for as long as the Cyberdeck Cafe is around and we’re not going anywhere.

How hard is it to learn?

If you've been printing or modeling for any length of time you'll just need to read the menus look at the icons and you’ll feel right at home ready in 30s flat. Completely new? Figure on about 3 hours and you'll be producing models worth printing.

What are some of the tools it has already?

Shape snap: whatever face you drop a shape on it snaps in place where you can make more adjustments while the part is on its own plane, parts sit on a 0.10mm grid (0,05 is an option just not default). You ever group a part and on inspection there’s a zero width slice of un-jonted model? Tick the show faults and model defect get highlighted making them easier to spot.

importing a mesh: Some automagic work is done to non destructively repair overlapped and non manifold edges so even the most tinkered stl can be saved. If a mesh is too far gone to close, it loads it anyway and lets you carry on, You want a hammer? Go right ahead this is a tool that serves you and if it refuses to open your file its no use to you or me.

It's parametric. Group a hole into a part, change the hole later, and the group rebuilds itself. Better still, you can roll back one part inside a group and leave everything else exactly where it was. I have not seen that anywhere else.

Fillet, chamfer and cove edges.

Hollow a part and open it through a face.

Simplify mesh is mainly so you can export from here and not generate a file so large fision720 would cry.

Wverall performance?

Wont claim this is the most efficent modeler and ifs hard ot compare others side by side because they die on he first opertion done to that 800k. its real cut and dry here, the others outright die or chug along so slow i force close them after getting bored waiting, before dying they sit roughly using 2x the RAM, Ii know not real scientific but this comparison died before it could begin.

What if it crashes?

Autosave is always running long as you selected a save folder location. You don’t have to use autosave and can instead "save" and it writes the whole project as one .wt3d file. Every part stays editable and imported meshes come back byte for byte. Its not a step file but its close to it and exporting as a real step file is on the short list, ideal world its always a byte for byte transfer. The only fullblown crash i've seen happen is with a RAM overflow which i triggered on purpose and is far outside normal operation, anyway in case of a just hit refresh in the browser and wait a few minutes, the reload takes longer because its not just loading the file but also its revision history which can be slow depending on your storage. Just wait maybe up to 5 minutes if the model had over 2m triangles but it will load. Under 500k most operations happen in a few seconds.

Built for eyes like mine and yours

Having a less common colorblindness there’s very few softwares that cater to it, best i had found was built into AMD Adrenalin app, it’s color corrector applies system wide so it works with any software, great except they killed support for it and bricked its ability to run unless i do a firmware downgrade but the firmware had a fix i need.

So what once was a great tool is again enshitified after an update. Most software treats that as somebody else's problem and never even make the attempt so good on you Advanced Micro Devices at least you tried.

Who really made it?

One man and a coding bot in a trenchcoat. Yes, AI wrote essentially every line of code. I designed it, I broke it, I made it fix itself until it stopped breaking then broke it again. If using ai to improve my life greatly bothers you, you might be the problem.

It’s still new

No rough edges but im sure we'll find plenty of use cases i haven't thought to test for as its been stable enough that I trust it with real parts real work. There are no automatic updates. Come back to the repoor just use the live hosted version as it will always be up to date with the latest release, more manipulation tools and some new ease of life features, the next one is a manual button to check for updates and grab the current link so you can dl it without leaving the tab. If you use a dedicated portable version of chromium you'll never have to worry about being greated by forced updates and broken dreams. Lifes enough without that bs every day. I know its missing loads of interesting features so make a case for your favorites, some tool or operation not there yet just ask and it may make it into the next release.

Source and a prebuilt html package is provided at the repo.
